The death of a woman in Bayhead is being ruled suspicious by police.

Late Sunday night, shortly before midnight Sept. 18, Colchester District RCMP responded to a 911 call from a Clarks Road residence.

Upon arrival officers discovered a deceased female. A short time later, police located a 47-year-old male suspect, who drove off in a vehicle with police following.

Police located the man near Lockerby Memorial Cemetery on Highway 6, Tatamagouche. Officers verbally engaged with the man who was inside his vehicle when gunfire was exchanged just before 7 a.m. and the suspect was wounded. He has been taken to hospital for treatment and remains in police custody. The extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.

The Northeast Nova Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation into the suspicious death.

The RCMP has referred the shooting incident to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), which has taken over the investigation. Given the matter is now being investigated by SiRT, the RCMP is unable to discuss further details.

Both scenes are currently being held by police.

When possible, further information about the suspicious death will be shared.

There is no risk to public safety at this time and at the request of the RCMP, both schools in Tatamagouche were closed for the day, and buses wouldn’t be running from River John to Pictou County.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact SiRT, toll free, at 1-855-450-2010.
