The Pugwash Farmers’ Market is gearing up for another successful season with new vendors, new site plans, new special events and new programming.
The first demonstration will be “Mulching Debbie’s Way” with local master gardener, Debbie Cameron, at 10 a.m. May 20, the first day of the 2017 market season. Cameron will be mulching one of the garden beds at the Train Station Library, next to the farmers’ market site. Her methods result in less weeding and watering and will enable you to enjoy your garden more. This demonstration is co-sponsored by Pugwash Communities in Bloom.
The May 20 demonstration is the first of a series of new programs for 2017. The focus of the programming at the market will be The Wellness Tent. With the support of a Pugwash and Area Community Health Board, The Wellness Tent will be an interactive, informative and hands-on area of the market. Each Saturday morning for 10 weeks, activities will provide accessible information sessions, encourage participation and discussion and the opportunity to ask questions.
Programming will include such topics as how to eat locally, purchase food locally; what organic means and what is in your food; food skills sessions; taste testing; economical nutritional recipe handouts; small meals for seniors; focusing on seasonal produce from market vendors; how to grow your own food; preserving food; gardening tips: perennials, trees and shrubs; mulching and composting; water conservation; recycling; how to be physically active in the area: hiking trails, sports; protecting the environment in our area; natural health products, remedies and cleaning products
Programming will be delivered by a St. FX co-op nutrition student in collaboration with participating ‘Get Healthy’ communities – Oxford, Springhill and Amherst – and guest presenters. The goals are to engage the community to commit to be a ‘Healthy Village’, to increase awareness of food security, to encourage the public to buy local and to promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
Established in 2006, the Market has approximately 30 vendor members that attend the outdoor, seasonal market each Saturday morning between the May Victoria Day weekend and the October Thanksgiving weekend. Check out our Pugwash Farmers’ Market Facebook page for special events throughout the summer.
