The Light has placed third for its arts coverage in the 2018 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards (CCNAs).
News Media Canada announced its winners for the 2018 awards recently, and The Light placed third in the Best Coverage of the Arts category, in a circulation class of up to 9,999. The Yukon News, based out of Whitehorse/Yukon Territory, claimed the top spot, with the Rocky Mountain Outlook, of Canmore/Kananaksis/Banff/Lake Louise, Alta., coming in second.
In this category, publications are allowed to submit up to four different pieces to showcase the various coverage. The Light’s submission included:
- From the North Shore to Maudie, published May 2017
- A prized piece, published June 2017
- Vanishing breed, published September 2017
- A classical evening, published October 2017
“This recognition on a national level highlights just how much the North Shore has to offer,” said The Light’s editor, Raissa Tetanish. “The arts scene is a thriving one in this area. There are some amazing and talented artists here, which doesn’t and shouldn’t go unnoticed.”
The four stories were chosen for submission as a means to highlight the diversity of the scene – featuring a cinematographer, photographer, fibre artist, and classical musicians.
“These are by no means the only arts coverage featured in The Light, but rather a small portion chosen to show the wide range of what the North Shore has to offer,” said Tetanish.
