Each year, the Tatamagouche & Area Minor Hockey Association hosts a tournament in memory of Wayne Waugh, an admired husband, father, businessman, founder/owner of Waugh’s Backhoe Service, as well as dedicated community volunteer.
Waugh was a 15-year veteran of the Tatamagouche Volunteer Fire Department, acting as pump captain for nearly 10 years. He was the volunteer chairman of the Nelson Park board of directors.
He touched the lives of most people through his reliable service to countless customers and his community involvement.
Waugh was always a keen supporter of Tatamagouche & Area Minor Hockey, from purchasing hockey jerseys to sponsorships. To honor him, we would like to extend an open invitation to the community to join us in commemorating a deserving son, husband, father, businessman, friend, and volunteer.
He died in a tragic accident on March 8, 2000. The memorial tournament was formed eight years later, just a week prior to Waugh’s parents and one of their grandsons dying in a house fire.
Waugh’s parents worked hard and were generous contributors within the community. His mother cooked for anyone who walked through her door, while Waugh’s father was always willing to lend a helping hand. Their grandson joined the Tatamagouche Titans for the initiation program, as well as Novice.
The 2019 Wayne Waugh Memorial Hockey Tournament will be held Feb. 15-18 at the North Shore Recreation Centre. Novice, Atom A and C divisions will play Feb. 15 and 16, with the final two days feature the Peewee A and C, and Bantam divisions.
All proceeds from these events go towards supporting the minor hockey program in the community. Please come out and cheer on the children while supporting a great cause at the same time.
There will be 50/50 draws all weekend at each game, as well as a puck toss on Saturday and Sunday for a chance to win a great prize, and other raffle prize draws. Members of the Waugh family will join firefighters in the presentation of the gold and silver medals at the tournament.
The full tournament schedule can be found on the North Shore Recreation Centre’s Facebook page.
This weekend is made possible by many of our generous community corporate sponsors. Any individuals or businesses interested in making a donation towards the event can contact Barbie Cook at 902-890-1885.
